The Power of Play Therapy

Casa de Esperanza is excited to partner with Family Houston to introduce Play Therapy as a new initiative to support the emotional and cognitive development of the children in our Foster Care program. Many of the children we serve have experienced trauma and struggle with transitions, communication, and emotional regulation. Play Therapy provides them with a safe and structured way to express themselves and work through challenges in a way that feels natural to them—through play. Each child undergoes an initial assessment with our Qualified Mental Health Professional, Rosalys, followed by an additional assessment by Family Houston before beginning therapy. These evaluations help create a personalized treatment plan focused on the child’s unique strengths and challenges.

Every Wednesday, children participate in two structured play sessions. In Room 1, they take the lead, freely choosing what they want to play. Towards the end of the session, the therapist gives them a five-minute countdown to help them get ready to transition out of the room. In Room 2, the therapist provides a very structured environment with detailed instructions, helping children develop new skills with following directions. Caregivers remain present throughout the sessions, and in the final five minutes, they meet one-on-one with the therapist to discuss patterns, progress, and strategies they can continue implementing at home. Through Play Therapy, children not only gain confidence and self-expression but also develop critical skills that will support their success beyond Casa, especially as they transition into school and new environments. This initiative is already making a difference in the lives of our children, and we look forward to seeing their continued growth and healing.
