The end of the year offers you a unique opportunity to change lives through your generosity. Donors like you are helping to keep more children safe from abuse and neglect with thoughtful year-end giving. Read on to learn about tools and options to make a big impact this holiday season.
Big changes are coming to charitable giving and 2025 is the perfect time to get ahead. Starting in 2026, new federal tax rules may impact how your gifts are deducted:
- If you typically take the standard deduction, you may be eligible for a new charitable deduction: up to $1,000 for individuals or $2,000 for couples.
- If you itemize, you’ll only be able to deduct the portion of your gifts that exceeds 0.5% of your adjusted gross income.
These changes might affect how and when you choose to give. For many donors, 2025 may be a meaningful time to revisit your giving plans.
1. Gifting Stocks or Appreciated Assets
Did you know that donating stocks or other appreciated assets can be more beneficial than giving cash? When you give appreciated securities that you have held for more than one year, you not only avoid paying capital gains taxes, but you can also deduct the full market value of the asset on your tax return. This means your donation can have an even greater impact at Casa de Esperanza, allowing us to continue keeping children safe without the burden of tax implications on your generous gift. To donate stock, contact donations@casahope.org for transfer information.
2. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
If you are 70½ years old or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) directly to Casa de Esperanza. This type of gift can satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) while providing you with a tax benefit. The amount you donate through a QCD is not included in your taxable income, allowing you to support our mission efficiently. This option can be particularly advantageous for those who do not itemize deductions. Donating through your IRA is easy – simply send your donation directly from your IRA portal or write a check from your IRA checkbook. To avoid potential tax issues, it’s often advisable to make your QCD well before the end of the year.
3. Grants from Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)
If you have a Donor Advised Fund, you can recommend grants to Casa de Esperanza directly from your fund. This method allows you to make a significant impact while also enjoying the tax benefits of your initial contribution to the DAF. By granting funds in this manner, you can strategically support our initiatives and projects, ensuring your philanthropic intentions align with our mission. Your involvement through a DAF can help ensure that the assistance we provide reaches children and families in crisis who need it most.
Why Choose These Options?
Each of these giving methods offers unique advantages over traditional cash donations. They provide you with tax benefits, enable you to maximize the impact of your generosity, and help you align your financial goals with your philanthropic aspirations. By considering these alternatives, you can contribute to Casa de Esperanza in a meaningful way that supports our ongoing efforts to create a brighter future for children and families.
We encourage you to consult with your financial advisor or tax professional to explore which giving method aligns best with your financial situation and philanthropic goals.
