Casa de Esperanza recently lost two beloved members of our community, Ed Smith and Sister Patricia (Pat) Aseltyne, whose unwavering dedication touched countless lives.
Ed Smith was a beloved member of our community, long-time volunteer, and former Governing Board President. Since first learning about Casa in 1996, Ed dedicated himself to creating a warm and loving environment for the children in our care. What started as a desire to rock babies soon grew into a deep commitment to mentoring young boys in need of a positive male influence. Whether arriving with freshly baked lemon bars made just for them or offering his steady, compassionate presence, Ed made every child feel seen and cherished. One little boy he cared for, adopted in 2012, called Ed every day—a testament to the profound and lasting impact he had. Even after “retiring” from volunteering, Ed remained involved, and we are grateful he had the chance to visit in November and rock babies one last time. His kindness, dedication, and unwavering love for the children of Casa de Esperanza will never be forgotten.
At 66 years young, Sister Patricia (Pat) Aseltyne left Michigan to begin a new chapter at Casa de Esperanza, dedicating 20 years to serving children and families in need. As a caregiver, she provided love and comfort, including to Rosa, a child dying of AIDS, whose brief life deeply impacted her. She later became our Coordinator of Aftercare and Outreach, tirelessly supporting families as they were reunited, advocating for them in times of hardship, and offering unwavering friendship. Known for her courage, compassion, and generosity of spirit, Sister Pat touched countless lives.

Both Ed and Sister Pat embodied Casa’s mission of love, service, and hope. Their legacies will live on in the lives they changed, and they will be profoundly missed.
