For Shauna, being a caregiver at Casa de Esperanza is more than a job – it’s a calling. Shauna, originally from Cullman, Alabama, first learned about Casa de Esperanza from one of her college professors. Drawn to the idea of serving her community, she joined the AmeriCorps program, hoping to make a meaningful impact. It wasn’t long before she found her true purpose at Casa – working with children and providing them with the love, care, and stability they deserve. “Seeing the children grow and knowing I’ve been a part of that is the most rewarding thing,” she shares. Shauna has not only witnessed the transformation of the children in the neighborhood but has also played a vital role in fostering the growth of other AmeriCorps members who serve at Casa. A key part of Shauna’s journey has been Casa’s partnership with the AmeriCorps program, which brings passionate, mission-driven caregivers to the foster care neighborhood.

Shauna was a Hands of Hope AmeriCorps Member for the 2023-24 year. Now in her second year with the program, Shauna is an AmeriCorps Team Lead, serving as a mentor to our AmeriCorps Caregivers and a support to our Foster Care Neighborhood Directors. “AmeriCorps brings a level of integrity and professionalism to the workplace,” Shauna explains, “The people I work with are top-notch. They are bright, dedicated, and have big futures ahead of them. The passion they bring to the neighborhood is truly inspiring.” Shauna believes deeply in the power of collaboration, recognizing that every role – whether changing diapers, checking vitals, or making major decisions – contributes to the overall success of the foster care neighborhood. “They say it takes a village, and it truly does,” she reflects. “AmeriCorps caregivers, staff, and volunteers all play a part in providing a home filled with love and healing.” This unity among caregivers is crucial for the well-being of the children they serve. “The kids need stability. With multiple caregivers, it’s important to work together so that the children feel safe and secure,” she says.
When asked what she would say to someone considering becoming a house parent or AmeriCorps caregiver, her advice is clear: “When your heart is in the right place, you can do anything. It may be a challenging time, but the growth and strength you gain from the experience make it all worth it.”
