Love Makes a Family

Richard and Dana’s journey to expand their family led them to Casa in 2002, shortly after the birth of their son Nicholas. Through the guidance of a friend, a Casa employee at the time, they began the process to become foster parents. After navigating training and other requirements, they welcomed two foster babies, including Mia, into their home. Their long-term goal was always adoption, and while they were open to fostering, they had always dreamed of providing a child with a permanent, loving home.

Their foster journey was not without heartache. One of their foster children, whom they had hoped to adopt, was reunited with a family member. “You know from the beginning that it’s a possibility, but the heartbreak when it happens is indescribable,” Dana shares. Despite the pain, they remained focused on the love they had for Mia and Nicholas, and the bright future ahead. With Casa de Esperanza’s unwavering support, they navigated the challenges of foster care, received assistance when needed, and found reassurance in the community surrounding them.

For them, fostering and adopting Mia has been one of the greatest decisions of their lives. “The biggest thing that I think we learned about fostering and adopting is the absolute unconditional love that I did not know I could give to someone who wasn’t biologically mine,” Richard reflects. “Mia needed a family, and we were blessed to be in the right place at the right time.” Now, Mia is preparing to graduate high school and head to Texas State University to study Business Finance. “It feels like just yesterday we brought her home,” Dana says. “She’s always been independent, determined, and full of heart. We couldn’t be prouder of the young woman she’s become.” From celebrating her adoption to watching her excel in academics and sports—including four years as a varsity swimmer— Richard and Dana cherish every milestone.

As they prepare for their next chapter as empty nesters, Richard and Dana encourage others considering fostering and adoption to follow their hearts. “Do your research, make sure it’s right for your family – but if it is, it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Casa made the process so much less intimidating, and the impact of opening your home to a child in need is something you will never regret.”
